This week, I decided to listen to "Play That Funky Music" by Wild Cherry.
I loved the intro to this song, I liked that it continued with that same vibe. It's so groovy! The vibe is so easygoing and fun, it's definitely enjoyable to listen to. The consistent beat and guitar melody makes it an easy listen as well, which is I can appreciate.
At the same time, the chorus still elevates the song to a different listen. Even upon my first listen, I was able to tell where the pre-chorus and chorus were supposed to be. This is because the style is very established. The song had a definite change for the pre-chorus, and flowed quite nicely into the chorus.
I thought the way that the lead singer sung was kind of fun. He has a rasp when he sings higher than usual, and I like that sometimes. It can add a sort of variety to a song.
I loved the bridge, it was very upbeat. It took the song to another level and provided a good foundation for the chorus and then outro to follow.
This is definitely among the longer songs of its era it feels like. In earlier days, I have gotten the vibe that generally songs are 2-3 minutes long, which can be considered short in our modern day. 5 minutes is usually decently long for a song.
I don't this I've listened to this song before but now I really want to. I love vibey music and how you describe this song seems like something right up the alley of music that I really like. You made good observations on little details of the song like the singers dialect and the flow of the song.
ReplyDeleteI really like this song as well because it is just really chill. I personally don't listen to music like this on a regular basis but it really is good if you aren't in the mood to do a lot of in depth thinking when listening to a song because this one is completely predictable. Some might say that that aspect of the song is lame, but for some it could be preferable.
ReplyDeleteI think the title of this song is SO perfect and fitting. Everything about it is funky. The style the lead singer is utilizing, the bass line, the lyrics, everything. Something I noticed about this song, which is kind of universal to a lot of songs we've listened to in this unit, is how consistent the beat is. I feel like the groove never stops and the song goes on pretty consistently, which I personally like. I also noticed the cowbell in the back, it's simple and quiet but I think it adds so much to the song.
