"Deed I Do"
This week, I listened to "Deed I Do" by Ruth Etting.
I love this style of singing and the tone that it gives off. Her vibrato isn't huge or incredibly showy, but it is sweet I think that it fits in with the overall vibe of the song.
I enjoy the playfulness of the lyrics. Additionally, the usage of the 1st person gives the listener an option that they don't realize. They could be imagining the lovely lady singing to them, or that they, themselves, are singing to someone in particular. This helps with making the song feel relatable, and I believe that this adds to the appeal of the piece.
This song does not focus on telling a particular story, but rather, the feelings surrounding a person and the singer's feelings about it all. I found this interesting, because a number of successful songs are successful due to their powerful storytelling. However, an influential song does not have to have a good storyline in order to be great-- it just needs to provoke emotion, and that's what I believe this song did.
It is not an incredibly complicated song, but it definitely still gets the job done, and does so quite well.
