"Cross Road Blues" by Robert Johnson

This week, I decided to listen to "Cross Road Blues" by Robert Johnson.

I found it very nice to learn about blues songs, because I have always thought that they sounded rather interesting and fun. This song is not an exception to that description. Robert Johnson's voice is nothing short of unique, and it gives a playful vibe to the song. The guitar style is also quite unique, and definitely sounds organic. This is due to the recording style that this is done in, in the sense that it sounds like the song is being performed live in front of you, even though it isn't.

It was a little bit difficult to be able to tell what the lyrics were that Johnson was singing. It was much easier to follow along using the real-time lyrics that were shown on apple music. This helped me understand and analyze the song much better as I listened to it.

While the song is slightly upbeat and seems to have a joyful air to it, the lyrics are not the same. The lyrics are sad, and often speak of "sinkin' down". The narrator is at a crossroads, and most definitely is not enjoying their experience there.

Week 2 -- "Deed I Do"

 "Deed I Do"

This week, I listened to "Deed I Do" by Ruth Etting.
I love this style of singing and the tone that it gives off. Her vibrato isn't huge or incredibly showy, but it is sweet I think that it fits in with the overall vibe of the song.
I enjoy the playfulness of the lyrics. Additionally, the usage of the 1st person gives the listener an option that they don't realize. They could be imagining the lovely lady singing to them, or that they, themselves, are singing to someone in particular. This helps with making the song feel relatable, and I believe that this adds to the appeal of the piece.
This song does not focus on telling a particular story, but rather, the feelings surrounding a person and the singer's feelings about it all. I found this interesting, because a number of successful songs are successful due to their powerful storytelling. However, an influential song does not have to have a good storyline in order to be great-- it just needs to provoke emotion, and that's what I believe this song did.
It is not an incredibly complicated song, but it definitely still gets the job done, and does so quite well.

Week 12: "Shake It Off" by Taylor Swift

For the final blog, I decided it would be only right for me to write another post about Taylor Swift. So this is on "Shake It Off"...
